What You Need To Know As An Actor

There are a couple of things every actor should know about auditioning. The main tool besides their body of an actor is their voice.

Get involved as much as you can in live performing to discover how your character ingredients come across to others. The deeper you go with a character the more believable the experience becomes for both the audience and yourself. Since ancient times men and women have practiced the art of acting- playing the role of a character in a story, for the entertainment of an audience.

Acting schools are the perfect forum to enhance and embrace people who have what it takes to become an actor/actress. Many acting schools have differing programs that allows the student both choice and flexibility when choosing the class to suit their requirements. Acting Schools can be found in many fine arts departments in colleges and universities across the country. Four-year degrees through intensive professional study in Acting Schools are common, however, some specialized acting schools provide programs that last just weeks.

People who are just getting into the acting business have quite a few misconceptions about how the casting process works. Many agents and casting directors go to these small theaters looking for talent.

By definition an agent is someone who finds work for an actor at a fee of about 10 to 15% of whatever he earns for that job. In getting the audition in the first place, you or your agent are going to have to submit a photo and resume to the casting director. Understanding these issues will make it much easier for you to decide which agent best fits your ambitions and talents. Research is the key to finding an agent that suits your needs. Yes sometimes the casting agent will have them there for you but why rely on them to determine you success. Take some classes, work on some student projects and then keep knocking till you find an acting agent that is genuine.

Before you leave your home, make sure you have your headshot/resume neatly stapled together, the address and a map of where the audition is, and the phone number of the auditors in case you get lost. If you're young, audition for some graduate or undergraduate programs even if you probably wouldn't go.

Good acoustics were designed into theater halls to help performers to be heard differently and to have more subtle and natural reflections.

Join a theater group or company -- this will inevitably keep you on your toes.

Being a good actor is a skill that you can learn.

Acting: The Many Types of Actors

All humans are actors to some extent. This sounds Shakespearean but it is very true. Many times we have done what we do not like and many times we begin to like what we are doing. We represent those very feelings on stage or before the camera in the form of characters. The people who enact those characters are actors.

The hero-actor in a play or a film is not always the protagonist, though usually he is so. The plot of a story or a play takes the hero through a number of coincides or circumstantial changes to show that he can adjust in any space and time and yet remains a leader.

A tragic hero on the other hand distorts his own good circumstance and he also worsens in his temperament in such a way that the spectators sympathizes with wraths than looking down on him. In both the above cases the actors who portray these characters must be very skilled in showing their feelings by their eyes, the face and of course the body. Sometimes they may have to overact.

The comedians have to keep improvising methods to portray the force in the society and the foolishness of the rich who haven't experienced the world around and take it for granted that all happiness can be commodities. Many times a comedian performs serious roles yet he makes us laugh-he is an actor.

The lady on the other hand whether a heroine or a vamp usually shows excess feminine energy either she is a sacrificing friend, a mother or a seductress. To portray these feelings the lady actors need very good supporting actors.

The dancers or singers are also actors who are usually speaking of the hero, the heroine or the villain who would like to confess, or it could be about love, hate, or jealousy. Many times mindsets are condemned through a singer who also dances.

In short, all actors are informal teachers about life.

Who Attended Acting School?

Almost every actor needs to be literate and able to understand language from a variety of eras. A good actor can become anything he or she wants to be. If you want to really stand out as an actor, you will have to make your resume stand out for you.

When you look at all the famous actors out there they all have one things in common they all were passionate about becoming an actor, you need to be passionate about acting to become and actor. Plan to study your craft and become good at it; create your talent and persevere even if you are not getting parts and then share your knowledge and learn from others who share the same passion.

When working with agents to get work you should conduct yourself professionally in a setting. Actors need to promote themselves anyway they can, they need to hone their craft, try creating your own projects or joining a community theatre, co-op productions or doing anything that will help you get your name out there in the public and will help find an agent or someone who will notice your talents. Include a small thumbnail headshot of yourself on your resume.

What does the term acting mean, the definition is a person who portrays someone else or a character either on screen or on stage. When choosing an acting school you will need to notice that they offer many different programs that allows for flexibility when choosing the time to take the class this allows the student the ability to meet the requirements. The perfect forum is acting school it embraces the actors/actresses with the ability to enhance their talents to become the best they can be. When taking classes in a Universities they teach the finer points of how act and improve students craft of acting, they sharpen your skills but they do not spend the time showing actors how to get work on a consistent basis, or how to make a living as an actor.

The range of skills that an actor must have to be effective is very wide. To prepare for the skills to act you will need the following: you will need to connect to directors, producers and other actors and to listen to all of them.

When people talk about a hidden acting agenda they are referring to a term that describes a phenomenon where actors hide a condition or some trait or a quality of theirs because one of these things was the source they use that occurred earlier in their lives.

When actors perform in theater halls they were designed to have incredible acoustics, the reason for this was to help actors and performers so the audience are able to hear them and to give the performers and actors natural reflections when performing. People watch TV, go to movies or theater to be entertained. You need to start some place when becoming an actor, you should look into short films or independent theater and you should take a few simple classes, this will help you on your way, it is just the beginning.

Although, there are some exceptions, normally agencies will not work with actors that have no experience, it is very rare that they will consult inexperienced actors or take them in as clients.

Acting: The Many Rewarding Things About It!

Acting is one of the most rewarding and exciting things a person can do. A good actor can become anything he or she wants to be. Did you ever think about what it would be like being president of the United States of America or a homeless person begging for spare change? You can have the experience of being both, and still go home to your normal life. What other kind of career can offer that?

There is nothing that compares to the feeling of being on stage, or the butterflies in your stomach right before you walk out. It's an amazing feeling knowing that you are going to bring entertainment to a large group of people. For however long you are on stage, you are bringing them into a world that you helped create. A world full of wonder, excitement, heartache or despair. You can make them laugh, cry, or stand up and cheer.

You can also change people's lives. If you are performing in a play with a strong moral message the impact can be amazing. As you bring someone into a different world that you are creating on stage, a person's defenses are lowered. Their minds and hearts become open to the message that is being conveyed.

You will also learn a lot about yourself by acting. As you study a character, you also study yourself. In the process of becoming your character, you find way to relate your real life experiences. A part of you becomes the character and a part of the character becomes you. The deeper you go with a character the more believable the experience becomes for both the audience and yourself.

Now don't get me wrong, it's not the easiest profession to get into. It takes a lot of hard work, study, and determination. Even after all that, there is no guarantee that you can make a full time career out of it. Some actors study for years and years, go to the best schools, but get none of the breaks. Other people get discovered while eating lunch at a fast food joint. There is no formula for making it big. If anyone tries to offer you one, just hide your wallet and walk the other way.

Go out and get yourself a book on acting from your local bookstore or better yet the library (hey, it's free). Study all you can. Search the net, there is a ton of free info right out there. There are also loads of videos you can buy. During the summer take some time and go to an acting camp. There are also workshops all over the country all year round.

The great thing is, there are always places to go to act. Almost every community has a theatre troop of some kind. If not, just go ahead and start one for yourself. There are plenty of people who would love to get up on stage. You just have to look. So stop sitting there wishing you could be like the people you see on TV or at the movies. Get up, get out and start acting!

Acting: Registering a Domain Name for Your Child Star

Your child has done the hard part, breaking into show business, and the last thing on your mind as a parent is that somebody would try to use your child's newfound fame to their advantage.

Your loss is their gain.

It's recommended to think about registering your child's domain name as soon as your child a) works as a principal character in a TV show or film (has a credit on screen) or b) signs with an agent or manager. The reason for doing this as soon as possible is obvious: there are people out there who register domains of newcomers at the earliest opportunity. If you think to yourself "but my kid isn't famous yet" you are kidding yourself. There is a segment of the population that will immediately notice a new girl or boy on a TV show and immediately start posting their name around the Internet for other people to see.

So what is a domain name and how do you register one?

A domain name is the "internet address" you use to find a particular web site. A popular domain name for a search engine is "google.com." Most actors will register their domain name as "firstnamelastname.com." There are also domain names that end in .us, .tv, .net, .org and hundreds more. Concentrate on the .com extension. Can you register a domain name if you don't even have a web site? YES! In fact, many parents will simply register their child's domain name and "park" it - not use it, just so somebody else can't take it. They may or may not ever make a web site, but they know that somebody else can't pretend to be their child with the domain name either.

One of the best places to register a domain name is a place called Go Daddy. It's a funny name but one of the best. GoDaddy.com is known as a domain name registrar, a place to register domain names. Once you are at their site, type your child's name (wthout spaces) into the "Start Your Search Here" box and click on "Go." If the domain hasn't been taken yet, click on Continue. You will be asked to buy a whole bunch of stuff you really don't need so click on "No Thanks" to continue. You will then be asked to buy even more things, so just click on Continue again. You may have some things auto-selected for you like "Traffic Builder" - uncheck it and click on Continue again.

Eventually you will get to a checkout page that will have you double-check everything to make sure it is correct, as well as choose a payment method. If there is anything else in your cart besides the domain name, remove it! For 2 years it should only cost you about $18.40.

You can choose to pay by PayPal or by Credit Card. Select which one and then also put check marks into the boxes saying you have read the agreement and terms of service. (I suggest actually reading them too, although they are pretty standard) - then click on Checkout Now.

The next section will require you to put in personal information. IMPORTANT - this information will be public, and once it is out there, people CAN bring it uyp again even if you change it. For the telephone number I would suggest your agent or managers number, NOT your private home phone number. Cell phone is also fine if you don't mind - but you will probably get calls on it. For address, again put your agent or manager's address, or a post office box if you have one. If you put your real home address, remember this will be available for everybody to see.

Continue the checkout process. Once everything is done, that is it. Your domain is now officially "parked" and will be on the Internet in 4-24 hours. When people call up the domain name in their web browser, they will see godaddy's "parked" page. If you ever build a web site for your child, or have someone build it for you, you will need to modify the settings in the GoDaddy control panel. Your web designer / web host should be able to help you with that.

Securing your child's domain name early means it won't be stolen later. Use your own judgment for when you feel it is the right time. Remember, if the .com is taken, you can try one of the other extensions, but even today, nothing is as good as a .com.

How to Become an Actor

Many people want to know how they can get into acting. Sometimes a model realizes that he or she cannot make a full-time living with a modeling career. Other models are aware of their limitations such as height and bone structure. They know that beyond print work, it can be real tough to get into modeling. So they choose to step into the broader acting field.

Acting requires more specialized training than modeling does. Most actors and actresses get into acting by getting involved in theatre, dramas, plays and stage productions. Many actors and actresses also get into acting through an acting coach. An acting coach trains you much like an athletic coach does, except the muscle that is trained is your "acting muscle". You are trained in learning improvisation, cold reading, and acting methods. These are generally the basics for a beginning actor.

Once you have discovered how to get into acting, you will also need to know about the two types of productions exist for actors and actresses.

There is union work and non-union work. Union work is controlled by the Screen Actor's Guild and the AFTRA. If you are interested in doing union work you do need to be signed on with a Screen Actor's Guild franchise agent. A quick search on the internet on "SAG Agencies" will give you information to all the agencies that have access to the current job openings in your area.

For acting work that is non-union related, you can use other methods of searching to find work in your area, such as hiring an agent. If you have an agent, he or she will submit potential acting jobs to you. Job opportunities can also be found on websites.

Your agent will need copies of your resume and your headshot picture. This is the best way to go in order to get into motion pictures, television or commercial work.

The reality is that you will need a break -- to be asked to come to an audition. An audition is conducted at the office of the Casting Director. You will be reading "sides". A "side" is a small portion of the script. You may be able to acquire these small scripts in advance so that you can practice your acting skills.

Then, during your audition, someone opposite of you will actually act the role out while you read the "side". Be sure to ask the Casting Director what your motivation in the particular session will be so that you can put more of natural talent into it. It will help you to read the lines appropriately. There will be lots of other actors waiting to read for the very same role that you will be reading. Show business is competitive. Once you are done reading, you will go home and wait for your agent to call you with the good or bad news.

Another way to break into acting is to become an "extra". Many people make a partial living being an extra in movies or film. Extras are paid anywhere from being a volunteer to $200 a day on most movie sets. You can locate jobs as an extra actor by finding union films.

Below are some tips to get you started from the mere beginner to full time acting;

1. Join your local speech and drama clubs. If you're in school, join the theatre there. Usually, every major city has a theatre.

2. Brush up on acting skills -- join classes, seminars, and events. Gain as much skill and experience as possible.

3. Read books -- your local library will have books on acting.

4. Start small -- don't try to go for the big parts if you are a new. Ask to be an extra or a stand-in.

5. Leverage the web. Job opportunities can be found on websites, so just search and find some.

With continued dedication and persistence, you will realize your dream of becoming an actor or actress. It takes hard work and relentless determination, but you know you can do it. The business is extremely competitive and the chances of big success are small - but there is a chance.

Is Drama School Necessary to Be a Good Actor?

Many actors or actresses will have undergone training at a drama school to attain the necessary skills required to succeed. Without doubt this training will be truly beneficial and will almost certainly give any budding actor an edge when trying to learn their craft.

Drama School training would usually consist of a course lasting for about 3 years and during this time the budding actor would learn a variety of skills including movement, stage fighting, mime, musical theatre, production techniques, working to camera and much much more. The idea of undertaking such a course is to prepare the actor so that he is able to undertake a variety of roles and fully understand his craft.

Actors may want to follow one particular area of their craft, for example many will want to work in TV, and will love nothing more than to star in a soap opera 3 times a week with a regular wage. Then again some may prefer to stay with live performances in the theatre and some may want to make movies. The fact remains though, that as an actor if you are going to stay in work then you will have to be able to diversify and take on a number of different roles.

I Never Went To Drama School! Does This Mean I'll Never Make It?

Easy answer: going to drama school does not mean you will make it as a successful actor... Fact! It may give you an edge but there is no guarantee that you will be a great success. The important thing to remember here is that it is all about the talent that you have and how you apply it.

If you go to a casting and you prove to the director that you are good for the part and can deliver the goods then you are in with a great chance of getting the role. The fact remains that the casting director likes you for what you have displayed on the day and that will be noted. I know of many actors who have completed drama courses only to find that they have struggled to make any money. I still think undertaking a drama course is a great thing, but at the end of the day it is the person that you are, the talent you have and what you can offer to a casting director or producer that will determine whether or not you get parts.

If you are interested in going to a drama school then the procedure would normally be to contact the drama school direct whereby you would be offered the chance to audition to showcase your talent. This may involve reading a couple of pieces of literature, classic and modern and perhaps singing a song.

Remember that drama schools will only have a limited number of places so it will be essential to apply for any places early. Start making your enquiries at your earliest opportunity as there will be other budding actors all competing for a limited number of places.
